A Review of “The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution”

Studying the original intent of the US Constitution and studying its current application are two very different, and at times contradictory, activities. This recently-released book aims to reconcile the two and show how the original ideas of the Founding Fathers have been usurped by a power-hungry judiciary branch and used to consolidate the power of the federal government.

The American Historical Romance (Cambridge Studies in American Literature and Culture)

Dekker traces the American historical novel from its origins in the early 1800s to the beginning of World War II, examining the genre’s connections with Enlightenment and Romantic theories of history, the rise of literary regionalism, the ambitions of Romantic writers to revive the epic and romance, changing gender roles, and individual authors’ troubled responses to the modern era’s great revolutionary and imperialistic conflicts. Though concerned with the historical romance’s development, Dekk

The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville

This first volume of Shelby Foote’s classic narrative of the Civil War opens with Jefferson Davis’s farewell to the United States Senate and ends on the bloody battlefields of Antietam and Perryville, as the full, horrible scope of America’s great war becomes clear. Exhaustively researched and masterfully written, Foote’s epic account of the Civil War unfolds like a novel.

Animated Documentary-Mockumentary about Evil in western civilization from Ancient Greece to present day. After all the comments I feel like some clarification is in order, but firstly, to you guys that liked it: Thanks, you’ve made my day. The film was intended to show what people have believed in and pointed to as evil throughout history. It was meant to get you to think about what evil really is. It is meant to show that when we get too obsessed with “evil” we might end up taking part in it ourselves. One has to separate evil and human cruelty. Human cruelty is people not being nice to one another. Evil is soemthing else, it is something we have created, a word and a concept for things that are not acceptable. It is a label for things that we do not understand and dont want to understand. But is evil really ever a complete explanation for anything? A lot of bad deeds has been done in the name of good. The people that did them ment good, are they evil? OK, and finally, This video is not meant to: -blame wester culture and people for all the “evil” in the world. I’m european, and thought that I better stick to my own history. -blame religion for all the evil in the world. -claim that God is dead. (It is simply a reference to the philosopher Nietzsche, look him up.) -offend anyone, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. -claim that Elvis was evil. -be an exact and complete account of the actual events that has taken place throughout history. The 2053 nuclear tests and explosions that took place between 1945 and 1998 are plotted visually and audibly on a world map. As the video starts out detonations are few and far between. The first three detonations represent the Manhattan Project and the two bombs that ended World War II. After a few representative minutes the USSR and Britain enter the nuclear club and the testing really starts to heat up. Even though the video does not differentiate between sub-critical “safety” tests and full detonations, you get a good idea of the fever of the nuclear arms race. The time line does not extent to tests by North Korea (October 2006 and May 2009). video credit: goes to Isao Hashimoto (www.ctbto.org/specials/1945-1998-by-isao-hashimoto/) The video was cleaned up, re-sized and edited to fit You tube’s 10min limit by the folks at Bit of Fun
