The Whiskey Rebels Written by David Liss

I have always loved history and historical fiction from the Revolutionary War period. The Whiskey Rebels takes place in the Philadelphia, New York City, and the area between there and Western Pennsylvania shortly after the war ended. The book is mostly factual with only a few fictional characters molded into actuality with a bit of fiction to enhance the story.

Is it an economics book, a futurist book or a history book? Well, it’s all three and it is a must read. The book I am referring to is one which I think everyone who wants to understand the world better ought to read. The book is: “The World is Flat; a Brief History of the Twenty-First Century” by Thomas L. Friedman; 2005.

Learning Our History in the USA

We are extremely concerned about reading, writing and arithmetic and have even created a system to test our students to make sure they can read and write and do basic math or they cannot graduate. Certainly, you have heard of the “No Child Left Behind Act” right? Still, this is not the only issue we have in America, many of the kids graduating cannot even tell you where the US is on a Globe, or where the various states are.

Historical Fiction Novels

The great thing about historical novels is that they take you to a period that was real and re-create it for us – opening up both intriguing stories, plus also informing us of the actual history of the times, people and places – usually with accuracy and attention to historical fidelity. The standard of writers in this genre make these novels some of the top fiction books you can read… simply as reading for pleasure or to learn more of times past in a fun way.

Secret History of Silicon Valley

9月 9, 2008 · Posted in Computer History · 50 Comments

[Recorded: November 20, 2008] Today, Silicon Valley is known around the world as a fount of technology innovation and development fueled by private venture capital and peopled by fabled entrepreneurs. But it wasn’t always so. Unbeknownst to even seasoned inhabitants, today’s Silicon Valley had its start in government secrecy and wartime urgency. In this lecture, renowned serial entrepreneur Steve Blank presents how the roots of Silicon Valley sprang not from the later development of the silicon semiconductor but instead from the earlier technology duel over the skies of Germany and secret efforts around (and over) the Soviet Union. World War II, the Cold War and one Stanford professor set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley. The world was forever changed when the Defense Department, CIA and the National Security Agency acted like today’s venture capitalists funding this first wave of entrepreneurship. Steve Blank shows how these groundbreaking early advances lead up to the high-octane, venture capital fueled Silicon Valley we know today.

Google first production server at Computer History Museum Here’s the description showed along with the system. — First Google Production Server Google, Inc., United States With limited funds, Google founders Lary Page and Sergey Brin initially deployed this system of inexpensive, interconnected PCs to procss many thousands of search requests per second from Google users. This hardware system reflected the Google search algorithm itself, which is based on tolerating multiple computer failures and optimizing around them. This production server was one of about thirty such racks in the first Google data center. Even though many of the installed PCs never worked and were difficult to repair, these racks provided Google with its first large-scale computing system and allowed the company to grow quickly and at minimal cost. — And, you can find the photos on the Flickr below.
